5 THINGS I LEARNED MY FRESHMAN YEAR OF COLLEGE

Going into college can be a little frightening, not knowing anyone and living on your own for the first time(bye mom’s homemade cooking), but it’s not as scary as people say! As I wrapped up my freshman year of college, I began to think of everything I have learned throughout the year and narrowed it down to 5 of what I think are the most important.

  1. Take advantage of the resources your school provides! I wish I took advantage of more library resources, which I will definitely utilize next school year. Going into the TA’s for extra clarification or if you don’t understand something is definitely a resource that I liked to use. They are awesome if you don’t want to go directly to the professor or you have quick questions, they are willing to help you with whatever you need!
  2. Form study groups! Find people in your classes or get together with friends to study. Get to know at least one person in each class and exchange numbers, so if you missed something your professor said in class or want to form a study group you have someone you can ask.  My friends and I loved to book study rooms in our library to get our homework done or just to study!
  3. Don’t bring your whole bedroom and more! I am notorious for overpacking and when the time came to start packing for school, I wanted to bring EVERYTHING. I didn’t even wear half the clothes I brought! If you start packing items with the purpose of only using it once or twice, chances are you probably will not use it at all(just like I did).
  4. Get involved! Even if you join one activity or club or whatever it may be, you are keeping yourself busy which gives you a break from school work and offers you a chance to get to know more people. I decided to rush and join a sorority, which was one of the best decisions I’ve made! I got to know so many more people and met some of my closest friends(I’m even living with some next year and couldn’t be more excited!).
  5. Go out and explore! I’m lucky to be in a city with endless things to do, but even if you aren’t in a huge city I’m sure there is a lot to do and see in the town/city you are unfamiliar with. I loved finding little coffee shops and new places to eat and just walk around. You have 4 years that go by super quick, so make your time at school count!
